Something to keep in mind - artists will respond more to a ';professional'; display, even if the location itself is progressive and forward-thinking. You need to have good lighting, safe and reliable hanging and display, and safety for the pieces - don't let anyone touch the works unless the artists specifically tell you that is what they want.
If possible, maybe you should consider having a local student (say, from a museum studies or curatorial program) oversee the hanging and installation of the art. They may be willing to volunteer their time in order to get something to add to their resume.
As far as contacting artists, consider local students or independent artists first. More ';established'; artists will be concerned with insurance, copyright issues, etc. So start small. If it gets bigger, keep these issues in mind. Many larger metropolitan areas have non-profit free legal centers for the arts communities. But this is all down-the-line concerns.

Bravo!! Congratulations for helping artists in your community. Wished more businesses did the same. Try contacting art clubs, community art associations even libraries asking for artist to submit colored photos of some
of their work. Study these to find the best for your barber shop interior, and pick a small amount to start with for your exhibit. Good luck and let us all know how it all comes out.
